How to Take a Screenshot on a MacBook?

Taking a screenshot on a MacBook is a straightforward process, thanks to Apple’s built-in shortcuts. Whether you need to capture the entire screen, a specific window, or a selected portion, Mac offers multiple ways to take a screenshot efficiently. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you capture your screen effortlessly.

1. Capture the Entire Screen

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3

  • The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop as a .png file.

2. Capture a Selected Portion of the Screen

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4

  • Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.

  • Release the mouse or trackpad to take the screenshot.

3. Capture a Specific Window

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar

  • The cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the window you wish to capture.

  • The screenshot will include a drop shadow around the window.

4. Capture and Copy to Clipboard

If you want to copy the screenshot instead of saving it as a file:

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3 (for a full-screen capture) or

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4 (for a selected area)

  • Then press Control while taking the screenshot.

  • You can now paste the image into an application like Preview, Word, or Photoshop.

5. Capture the Touch Bar (MacBook Pro Only)

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 6

  • The screenshot will capture the Touch Bar and save it to your desktop.

6. Use the Screenshot Toolbar for More Options

  • Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5

  • A screenshot toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to:

    • Capture the entire screen

    • Capture a specific window

    • Capture a selected portion

    • Record your screen (video recording)

  • Click Options to choose where to save the screenshot or set a timer.

Where Are Screenshots Saved?

By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop with the filename format: Screen Shot [date] at [time].png

To change the default save location:

  1. Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5

  2. Click Options

  3. Select a new destination such as Documents, Downloads, or a custom folder
